10-Year-Old Hosting “Shimmer Party” For Homeless

Show up for a fun few hours and to help out those in need

Campbell River girl coming up with new ideas to help community

Kids have a way of seeing simple solutions to complicated issues.

In the case of 10-year-old Ayla Badger, when she first realized last winter that some people in town had nowhere to escape the cold, she decided something had to be done about it.

In the winter, that involved bringing those in need rounds of hot chocolate, other treats and coats to stay warm.

Now that summer’s here, she’s devised a more seasonally apt approach to raising donations to help.

A Shimmer Party.

As she described, a Shimmer Party involves all attendees wearing their sparkliest outfits and dancing the night away.

“I really like to dance and stuff, and my friends really like to dance. It’s a good chance to dance and stuff,” she told the Campbell River Mirror.

But the dancing is ultimately just a means to an end for Ayla.

“I’m holding a party at the Sportsplex because I want to raise money for the homeless people downtown,” she said.

Ayla and her family have now become familiar with many residents downtown and regularly introduce other friends to those they’ve met in their work.

The party is a great place to make friends, and the hope is to encourage people to have this same open spirit toward the entire community.

Entrance for the Party will be $10 a person or $25 a family.

All proceeds will be split between the Hame?Elas Community Kitchen and making care packages to be delivered to people living downtown.

The dance will be held on May 13 from 4 PM until 6 PM at the SportsPlex.
